The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Mourns Officers Killed In The Line Of Duty

It is with great sorrow that we confirm two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were shot and killed in the line of duty late Saturday, March 31, 2007. Officer Sean Clark died at 12:14 AM and Officer Jeffrey Shelton passed away at 4:06 AM. April 1, 2007. Both officers were assigned to the North Tryon Division. Their families have been notified.

Details of the incident are still unfolding as the investigation continues. The officers were responding to a disturbance call at 10:26 PM at the Timer Ridge Apartments near Milton Road. The officers were both shot around 11:15 while struggling with a suspect in the apartment complex parking lot.


Officer Sean Clark, 34, was hired January 23, 2006 as part of the 148th Recruit Class. He was a 1991 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School.


Officer Jeffrey Shelton, 35, was hired February 28, 2001 and graduated with the 136th Recruit Class.
